Warriors 3 Pats 2 SO
The Regina Pats were at home Wednesday night with the Moose Jaw Warriors in town looking to snap a 7 game losing skid. The Pats last game was 3-1 loss at the hands of the Kootenay Ice on Saturday where the Pats went oh for 5 on the powerplay and gave up an empty netter late in the game. Matt Hewitt was outstanding in the loss making 35 saves on 37 shots while Lane Scheidl snapped a 5 game goalless streak with his 24th on the year. The Warriors come in losing their last game 5-0 at the hands of the Saskatoon Blades but had won two straight before that. Morgan Reilly has been back with MJ for 5 games coming in after the World Juniors and Toronto Maple Leafs training camp. The two clubs came in tied with 41 points in the standings with the Pats having a game in hand. With 22 games left in the season the Pats needed to start stringing wins together sitting 10 points out of the playoffs. The Pats scratches Wednesday were Colton Jobke, Adam Brooks, Carson Samoridny, Dryden Hunt and Griffin Mumby.
In the first the Warriors came out strong and got right to the forcheck early. The Pats were pinned in their own zone for the first two shifts and got the first penalty of the game. The Warriors were unable to capitalize. The Warriors would get the second powerplay of the game and it was then that they would open the scoring at the 10 minute mark as Justin Kirsch hammered a puck from the point and beat Matt hewitt who was screened for his 17th of the year from Travis Brown and Sam Fioretti and it was 1-0 Moose Jaw. The Pats would get the next two powerplays and had a number of shots and chances but Moose Jaws Justin Paulic made some good saves to keep his team up 1. Then with less than three minutes left in the period Brycen Gore picked up the puck for the Warriors in his own zone and chipped it past Darian Henry and broke in on a half breakaway and beat Matt Hewitt 5 hole for his 6th of the year unassisted and it was 2-0 Moose Jaw at the 17:42 mark. The period would end with the Warriors up 2-0. The Pats were outshot 13-11 in the first.
In the second the Pats started to turn the game in their favour and kept putting puck on goal. The Warriors and Pats would trade powerplays in the period but both teams would kill them off. Kyle Burroughs seemed to spark his team with a big hit and a fight on Josh Uhrich. Burroughs landed a huge right in the fight and the fans in the Brandt Centre were ignited. The Pats would get on the board on a beautiful play by Braden Christoffer who caused a turnover in the Moose Jaw Zone and went to the net left side. He pulled the puck onto his backhand and finished under Justin Paulic for his 4th of the year unassisted at the 15:47 mark. The Pats kept coming and with 1:17 left in the period Stephen Hak would tie it on a shot from the point that went off the skate of Warrior defenseman Braiden Doucette and in for his 2nd of the year and it was 2-2. The assists went to Colby Williams and Chandler Stephenson at 18:43. The Warriors had a glorious chance with less than 10 seconds left in the period as Sam Fioretti looked to have a wide open net to score but somehow the puck stayed out and the period ended tied at 2's. The Pats outshot the Warriors 15-11 in the second and 26-24 to that point in the game.
In the third period both teams would trade scoring chances but cold not find the back of the net. Both Matt Hewitt and Justin Paulic were outstanding in goal to keep the game tied at 2's. The Warriors got the lone powerplay of the period which the Pats were able to kill off. Regulation would end in a 2-2 tie. The Warriors outshot the Pats 11-5 in the third and we headed to overtime.
In the extra frame Morgan Reilly took a hooking penalty and the Pats went to their fourth poweprlay of the game 4 on 3. The Pats had a number of good scoring chances including Morgan Klimchuk who hammered a one timer just wide of the net. The Warriors did a good job blocking shots and Paulic made some nice saves and the Warriors escaped the Pats powerplay. The rest of OT would run its course and the game went to a shootout. The Pats outshot Moose Jaw 4-0 in the extra frame and the shots ended 35-35.
In the shootout the Pats shot first and Morgan Klimchuk tried the back hand move but lost the puck and didn't get a shot on goal. Justin Kirsch went first for Moose Jaw and he was stopped by Mat Hewitt. Lane Scheidl was next for the Pats and he tried to go up high but sent the puck just over the cross bar. The second shooter for the Warriors was Brayden Point who tired a move to the backhand but missed the net on the left side. The third shooter for the Pats was Dyson Stevenson and he tried to go 5 hole on Paulic who had the puck go off his skate and miss the net. Then out came Sam Fioretti for the Warriors and he tried to shoot as well but was stoned by the Pats Matt Hewitt and we went to extra shooters. The fourth for the Pats was Chandler Stephenson and he was stopped by Paulic and then out came Jordan Messier for Moose Jaw and he put a beautiful move on Hewitt and scored the game winner on the forehand to give the Warriors the win.
The Pats losing streak hit 8 games in the loss but they did pick up a point on the Kootenay Ice and Medicine Hat Tigers in the standings. Matt Hewitt was outstanding in goal making 33 saves in the loss, as did Justin Paulic in the win for Moose Jaw. The Pats powerplay looked much more dangerous on this night but went oh for 4 and is now 3 for 39 in the losing streak.
The third star of the game went to Moose Jaws Jordan Messier who got the game winner in the shootout. The second star went to Pat netminder Matt Hewitt who made 33 saves and the first star was Justin Paulic who also made 33 saves in the win for Moose Jaw.
The Pats are back in action Friday night home to the Brandon Wheat Kings to kick off a home and home set. 7 o'clock puck drop on 620 CKRM with the Press Box Sports Bar pregame show at 6:35.

Prairie Mobile Pats Skills Competition and Alumni Game Recap
Regina, Saskatchewan – Pats past and present were on the ice at the Brandt
Centre Monday night to support former Pats Captain Kyle Deck and his battle
against Kidney Disease. The two-part event featured an alumni game
involving many Pats greats and a skills competition with current Pats, alumni
and media showcasing their individual skills.
Alumni Game Recap
Despite Team White (featuring Mike Sillinger, Frank
Kovacs and Jamie Heward) being touted as the pre-game favourite, it was Team
Blue who jumped out to an early lead. Brad Anderson opened the scoring
just 2:30 into the game and Team Blue kept rolling from there. Mike Kirby
scored twice and added an assist in the first half as Team Blue opened up an
8-2 lead through 25 minutes. Rod Houk was a dominant force between the
pipes, stopping 18 of 20 shots in the frame.
After a short intermission, Team White hit the ice on
fire looking to get back into the contest. Martin Smith opened the second
half scoring for Team White and the comeback was on. Jared Jagow led the
charge scoring five times in the half to total six goals on the night while
adding one assist. Goaltender Shaun Fleming helped White get back in the
game, only allowing one goal on nine shots in the second. Down 9-7 in the
dying minutes, Kelly Markwart and Jagow scored 1:03 apart to tie the game 9-9
and send the game to a shootout. Team Blue would stave off the comeback
and take the game on Kirby’s shootout winner for the 10-9 victory.
Skills Competition Recap
After a quick warm-up and ice resurfacing it was time
for the current Pats to join with some of the Alumni and members of the media
for the Prairie Mobile Skills Competition.
The Fastest Skater Challenge opened up the
events with each current Pats player putting up times under 14 seconds in their
preliminary runs. Chandler Stephenson (Team Blue) posted the best time
with 12.94 seconds to complete his lap. Lane Scheidl (Team White) posted
the second best time (13.23) to advance to the Finals. Stephenson
wouldn’t be able to match his first run, but still earned Team Blue the
victory. On the Alumni side of things, Kyle Ross and Jared Jagow posted
the best times with Ross outskating Jagow in the final to earn Blue another win
and a 4-0 lead after one event.
With Team Blue commanding an impressive early lead,
Team White needed a strong showing in the Three Man Breakaway Challenge
to bounce back into the contest. The Team White shooters would sneak the
puck behind Blue netminder Teagan Sacher while Team Blue could only beat Matt
Hewitt once to make it a 5-3 score after two events.
Up next was the Hardest Shot Competition as
skaters attempted to post the fastest slapshot. Alumnus Jamie Heward
showed the kids a thing or two when he stepped into a 95 mph shot on his first
attempt. He followed it up with the hardest shot on the evening, clocking
his second attempt at 97 mph to earn Team White another point. The voice
of the Pats, Phil Andrews, stepped up for Team Blue with a 73 mph shot to beat
out CTV’s Lee Jones (67 mph) in the media category and even the event score at
one point a side. Chandler Stephenson stepped up again for Team Blue and
ripped a 94 mph shot to break the event tie and put Team Blue ahead 7-4 after
the third challenge.
Team White’s members showed off their accurate shots
in the Accuracy Challenge and brought the score a little closer.
First, Global Regina’s Derek Meyers added to Blue’s lead with an unorthodox
strategy of firing one-timers and beating out 104.9 The Wolf’s Ryan Mochoruk in
the media category. Mike Sillinger stepped up and put on a clinic for
both Alumni and current Pats when he knocked out four targets in five shots to
get Team White back even in the challenge. Rookie forward Adam Brooks
would give Team White the event win when he nearly matched Sillinger’s run,
hitting four targets in six shots to move the score after four events to an 8-6
Team Blue lead.
The Breakaway Challenge can make or break a
team’s performance in the Skills Competition and it was no different Monday
night. The first five shooters were stoned by the goaltenders before Mike
Sillinger (White), Kelly Markwart (Blue) and Jared Jagow (White) scored in a
row to make the score 9-8 in favour of Blue. Darian Henry restored the
two point lead, going five-hole on Matt Hewitt. Morgan Klimchuk responded
to pull White back within one before Lane Scheidl finally evened the score at
ten a side. The score remained tied until White fielded a surprise final
shooter… Kyle Deck. The former Pats Captain got Sacher to bite on a quick
move then roofed the puck to win the competition for Team White by an 11-10
score.

Ice 3 Pats 1
The Regina Pats returned home after an overtime loss in Swift Current on Friday to take on the Kootenay Ice at the Brandt Centre. Saturdays game was a rematch from last Friday when the Ice downed the Pats 2-1 on the back of netminder Mackenzie Skapski. The Pats picked up a single point against the Broncos Friday night and came in 8 points back of Saskatoon for 8th in the Eastern Conference. The Pats were looking to snap a 6 game losing skid and even the season series with Kootenay at 2. The Ice forwards Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau were riding 12 game point streaks coming in with 20 and 19 points respectively in that stretch. The Pats gave Matt Hewitt his 5th straight start in goal looking for his 12th win of the season. The Pats scratches Saturday were Colton Jobke, Adam Brooks, Carson Samoridny, Dryden Hunt and Darian Henry.
In the first period the Ice were the better team early as they caused a lot of problems for the Pats in the defensive zone. Kootenay would open the scoring 4:33 in as Jon Martin took a pass at the side of the net and finished top shelf for his 6th of the year from Austin Vetterl and Sam Reinhart and it was 1-0 Ice. Reinhart extending his point streak to 13 games with the assist. The Pats would start to get their feet under them after that and got their forcheck going. They would tie it up on an offensive zone faceoff as Chandler Stephenson won it back to Luke Fenske who then shot on goal and it was tipped in front by Lane Scheidl who beat Mackenzie Skapski for his 24th of the year at 14:46 and it was 1-1. Scheidl snapped a 5 game goalless streak with the first period marker. Right after the goal the Pats took two straight minors for boarding but the Pats were able to kill them off with Matt Hewitt making some nice saves as well as some help from the post and the period ended tied at 1's. The Ice outshot the Pats 15-12 in the opening frame.
In the second the Pats and Ice went back and forth for the entire period with the Pats getting two chances on the powerplay and the Ice got three. The Pats went oh for 2 with the man advantage while they killed Kootenays first chance. On their second the Pats took another penalty 30 seconds in and went down 5 on 3 and it was then that the Ice took the lead. Sam Reinhart took a nice cross crease pass from Luke Philp and finished up high for his 25th of the year at 16:05 from Philp and Joey Leach and it was 2-1. The Ice kept coming with 1:30 remaining in their third powerplay and if it wasn't for two beautiful saves from Matt Hewitt the game lead would have been extended. The second would end 2-1 with the Ice outshooting the Pats 12-7 in the frame and 27-19 overall.
In the third the Pats couldn't get much going in an attempt to tie the game. Regina had three powerplays in the frame and didn't get much going on any of them. The Ice had a powerplay of their own which the Pats killed off. The Pats third powerplay came with just over two minutes left in the game and they would pull the goalie but a turnover in the offensive zone saw Levi Cable skate up the right wing and finish into the open net for his 6th of the year from Jagger Dirk at 19:04 and the score was 3-1 and that would be the final. The Pats were outshot 11-4 in the third and 38-23 overall in the game.
The Pats powerplay went oh for 5 in the contest and in the two games over the weekend 1 for 14 and that has been the difference. Netminder Matt Hewitt was stellar in this one making 35 saves on 37 shots but his team only managed one goal and they dropped their record to 18-27-3-2 on the season. Penalties were momentum killers for the Blue and White as it seemed like every time they would start to push a penalty would be called against them and the ice would be tilted in Kootenays favour.
The third star of the game went to Kootenay defenseman Joey Leach who was fantastic in his own end. The second star when to the Pats goalie in Matt Hewitt with 35 saves in the loss and the first star went to Kootenays Sam Reinhart who extended his point streak to 13 games with a goal and an assist. He had 12 goals and 10 assists in that stretch.
The Pats are back in action on Wednesday at the Brandt Centre with the Moose Jaw Warriors in town. 7 o'clock puck drop on 620 CKRM.

Broncos 5 Pats 4 OT
The Regina Pats were in Swift Current Friday night looking to nap a 5 game losing streak. The Blue and White fell at the hands of the Broncos last Saturday 2-1 in a game where they played well but could not find the back of the net. The Pats had lost 3 straight games by a 2-1 score going into Friday. The Pats were without captain Colton Jobke who was out with a lower body injury. Carson Samoridny was also out after taking a hit from a teammate in last Saturdays game. The Broncos came in having won 6 straight and held the second spot in the East Divsision. Mark Lowry had his 21 game poitn streak halted in Regina last weekend but is still red hot. Swift was without forward Coda Gordon who was handed a 2 game suspension after a boarding call on Pats defenseman Luke Fenkse on Saturday. The Pats came in 9 points out of the playoffs and so a big two points on the line as they kicked off the final third of the regular season. The Pats scratches Friday were Colton Jobke, Bryar Ortynski, Carson Samoridny, Dryden Hunt and Griffin Mumby.
In the first period the two teams went back and forth early with scoring chances but both goaltenders, Eetu Laurikainen and Matt Hewitt looked good early. The Broncos got the first powerplay of the game but it was negated less than 20 seconds in as Adam Lowry took a tripping call in behind the Pat net. The Pats looked to carry the momentum early but after a big hit from Klimchuk down low 4 on 4 the puck slid out to neutral ice where Colby Cave picked it up and cut to the Pats net. Matt Hewitt made the initial save but Ryan Moser followed up and put in the rebound for his 13th of the year and it was 1-0 Swift at the 11:08 mark of the first. Brycen Martin got the second assis on the 4 on 4 goal. The Pats and Broncos showed their dislike for each other in the opening period as Tye Hand fought Tanner LeSann early on and then later in the frame Braden Christoffoer dropped the gloves with Dalton Reum. The Pats would get a powerplay with just over 2 minutes left in the period and they would capitalize as Morgan Klimchuk hammered a shot from the right side for his 25th of the year from Kyle Burroughs and Chandler Stephenson at 18:41 and it was 1-1. The Broncos DEaniel Dale would take exception to a hit with under a minute left in the perioed and ended up taking a roughing call and the Pats would get their 3rd powerplay with 1:59 carrying into the second. The Pats outshot the Broncos 11-10 in the opening frame.
In the second on the powerplay the Pats had some good zone time but couldn't find the back of the net however a short time later they would get the go ahead goal. Braden Christoffer took the puck up the right wing and cut to the slot and fired past Eetu Laurikainen for his 3rd of the year unassisted at the 6:05 mark and it was 2-1. The Broncos would then get a powerplay chance and Brycen Martin would get his first in the WHL as he fired home a puck in front from Graham Black and Ryan Moser at 8:24 at it was tied at 2's. The Pats got two more powerplays after that and couldn't score and at the end of the second the Broncos got a 2 on 1 as it expired and Colby Cave sent a cross ice pass for Chance Lund who got his 11th of the season in his 300th game in the WHL at 19:11 and it was 3-2 Swift Current. The Pats went oh for 3 on the powerplay in the period and went to the third down a goal. The Pats outshot the Broncos 6-5 in the second and 17-15 overall.
In the third the Pats would get the tieing goal from Chandler Stephenson at 7:16 as he threw a pass in front that went off a defenseman and into the bet for his 10th from Braden Christoffer and Jack Rodewald. Then 16 seconds later the Pats would get the lead as Trent Ouellette batted a puck out of midair and in for his 9th from Dyson Stevenson and Lane Scheidl at 7:30 and it was 4-3 Regina. Then with the net empty the Broncos would tie it at 4's as Matt Hewitt thought he had the puck covered but Colby Cave poked it into the net for his 14th from Brycen Martin and Richard Nedomlel with 1:04 left. The Broncos would take a delay of game penalty with seconds left on the clock which carried into the overtime period. The Pats were outshot 11-5 in the third and 26-22 in regulation.
In OT the Pats didn't get much going on the 4 on 3 powerplay which the Broncos killed off and then with under a minute left Chandler Stephenson took a goaltender interference penalty and the Broncos went to the powerplay. With 26 seconds left Jay Merkley found Adam Lowry at the right side an e finished into the wide open net for his 32nd of the year, Reece Scarlett the second assist and the Broncos won 5-4. Swift outshot the Pats 4-2 in OT.
The Pats went 1 for 9 on the powerplay in the game and that was a big difference in the the contest. Head coach Pat Conacher said in the post game show that they had to be happy with the point but that they should have found a way to close out the final minute when they were up a goal.
The third star of the game was the Broncos Brycen Martin who had a goal and 2 assists in the win. The second star went to Chandler Stephenson who picked up a goal and an assist. The first star went to Colby Cave who got the tieing goal in the third plus had two assists in the game.

Former Pats in town for Alumni Game Fundraiser
The Regina Pats will be holding their annual skills competition on Monday January 28th at the Brandt Centre. This year they have added a new component, an alumni game. While it will be a night of fun for both current and former players, as well as the fans there is another component at work. Former Pat captain Kyle Deck is battling Kidney disease and for the second time in two weeks the Pats organization is getting behind their former player with a fundraiser. All the jerseys worn by the Alumni will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to support Deck and his family in his fight with the disease. Names like Ed Staniowski, Mike Sillinger, Dale Derkatch and Jamie Heward will be in attendance and I had a chance to talk to a few of them this morning about the upcoming Alumni game on Monday.
I had the privilege of talking with Kyle Deck this morning for Pats TV and he talked about the struggle hes had and the support hes received since receiving the news. "Its been a long summer, I got diagnosed with kidney disease in May and its been an uphill battle but things are going better now. I started dialysis and I'm starting to feel a little better as the days go on. I'm still really tired a lot but and the support from the Regina Pats and my senior hockey team back home and the shooting stars foundation is overwhelming, it really is."
Mike Sillinger played 17 seasons in the NHL after graduating from the Pats and played in over 100 games in the big leagues. Sillinger said today that this upcoming Monday will be a special night to be apart of. "Kyle is a dear friend and a former Pat captain and is going through a real tough time. I think its excellent what the Pats are doing with the skills competition and incorporating an alumni game. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the guys back on the ice and my least alumni game was against Moose Jaw and now a few years later were playing against each other and obviously its for a great cause and I hope we raise a lot of money for him."
I also caught up with Jamie Heward spent time with 8 different NHL teams after moving on from junior hockey playing for his hometown Regina Pats. Heward says that he "This alumni game means more to us than most. Were coming out here to raise money for a guy who is struggling right now. Hes got a life threatening illness, he was a great captain for the Regina Pats and hes an exceptional human being. Mike (Sillinger) and I and the rest of the alumni are looking forward to going out and having fun but this is a different type of game. This is more about raising money for a guy who is in need right now. The fact that we can come out and have fun and help him out at the same time is great for us."
The skills competition and alumni game will take place on Monday January 28th at the Brandt Centre with the doors opening at 6 o'clock.
Here are the full interviews with Kyle Deck, Mike Sillinger and Jamie Heward which can be seen Thursday night on Pats TV at 7 o'clock on Access 7.

Thunder Recruitment Weekend in MJ
The Regina Thunder held their first recruiting session over the weekend in Moose Jaw. A total of 200 players took part in the practices with a number of high school prospects as well as some of the returning players. The Thunder have 68 of 75 players returning from last years team that went to the PFC finals versus the Saskatoon Hilltops.
I talked with head coach Scott MacAulay today and he said that it was one of the best recruitment weekends they have ever had. "Our coaching staff is very happy with the flow of the practice. We ended up having over 200 kids which is a very high amount of recruits but the thing I was most happy with was the quality of the recruits. I think that if you came out and watched practice and looked at our O-Line, linebackers, running backs, quarterbacks and DB's you would see quite a few guys that were high school all stars or played team Saskatchewan and so were pretty happy with the guys we were able to get out."
I asked Scott if they were focusing on a certain area for improvement. "I think the biggest thing is we only lost 7 guys so we have 68 of 75 spots already taken. We don't have a major focus on one specific position. Our biggest thing right now is that we want to get a little bit taller at linebacker and bigger on the O-Line and we want to make sure we keep bringing in good quality recruits that are going to come in a compete with our veterans for a spot on our roster."
The Thunder will hold another indoor recruitment weekend coming up on February 24th and March 24th.
Here is the full interview with Coach MacAulay.
Prairie Mobile Skills Competition Monday
Former Pats Face-Off in Alumni Game
Regina, Saskatchewan – The Pats take a break from their push for the playoffs
to showcase their individual talents in the third annual Prairie Mobile Pats
Skills Competition. Monday, January 28th at the Brandt
Centre, the Pats break into two teams and compete in the Fastest Skater,
Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting and the Breakaway Relay challenges.
New for this year, the Skills Competition will be
preceded by a Pats Alumni Game. Fans get a chance to see former Pats
return to the ice featuring Ed Staniowski, Mike Sillinger, Dale
Derkatch, Jamie Heward and many more. Fans have the opportunity to
take a piece of the game home with them as the Pats Alumni jerseys will be
auctioned off in support of former Pats Captain Kyle Deck and the Kidney
Foundation. To build on the money raised, the Shooting Stars Foundation
and its founders Jordan Eberle, Jamie Heward and Mike Sillinger are pledging to
match the funds earned through the Alumni Jersey Auction.
“Hockey is a small world and Kyle is a dear friend,”
says Heward. “As Regina Pats Alumni, Jordan, Mike and I are extremely
proud to help out in any way we can.”
Sillinger adds, “What better way to help out?
Let’s play some hockey with friends in front of great fans and at the same time
support a fellow alumnus in need with a jersey auction. Come out and
bid!”
After competing in the Alumni Game, former Pats join
current members of the Blue and White along with a select group of local media
to go head to head in the four challenges with each player’s points affecting
the team total.
“Every year we strive to put together new and exciting
events for our fans to enjoy and this season’s Prairie Mobile Skills
Competition being held in the Brandt Centre will be like no other,” says Pats
V.P. of Business Operations, Cliff Mapes. “These events don’t take place
without our important corporate partners and once again I would like to thank
Shea Paisley of Prairie Mobile Communications for taking a lead role in this
event for the third time along with Mike Sillinger, Jamie Heward and Jordan
Eberle of the Shooting Stars Foundation for supporting the Alumni Game
fundraiser for Kyle.”
The Brandt Centre doors open at 6 p.m. on

Quote of the Week
“Obviously you want to get the win but they had a good team over there. It was an eye-opening experience to see how good some of these guys are and how hard they work. It was just a great experience overall and I was happy to be a part of it.” – Morgan Klimchuk on his experience at the Home Hardware Top Prospects Game.
