Oil Kings 6 Pats 3



The Regina Pats were home to the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday looking to win their fourth straight game. The Pats were coming ff a win on home ice on Sunday where they came back from down 3-1 in the third period and sent the game to a shootout and Chandler Stephenson got the game winner as the Blue and White beat Brandon 4-3. The Oil Kings came in riding a 3 game win streak as well and were playing in their 6th of 8 straight road games. Edmonton was without their third leading scorer Henrik Sammuelsson in the contest who is a 1st round pick of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes in 2012. The Pats got their captain Colton Jobke back into the lineup after missing 18 games with a knee injury on the back end. Regina won the last meeting between the two clubs 3-2 in Edmonton where Matt Hewitt made 53 stops and Lane Scheidl scored twice in the win. The Pats scratches on Wednesday were Tye Hand, Bryar Ortynski, Dryden Hunt, Luke Fenske and Darian Henry.

In the first period the Pats got off to a great start and had a lot of pressure offensively in the early going. Regina would draw the first penalty of the game and on it the Pats would get the games first goal. Lane Scheidl finished his 35th on a beautiful between the legs pass form Morgan Klimchuk at 7:45. The second assist went to Chandler Stephenson and the Pats were ahead 1-0. The Oil Kings would start to turn the tide and tied the game as Michael St. Croix picked up his 34th from Cody Corbett at 11:11 and we were tied at 1's. Then Edmonton would take their first lead on a good individual effort from Dylan Wruck who skated up the left wing and finished top shelf for his 21st from David Musil at 17:24 and it was 2-1 Edmonton. The Pats would get it back however 26 seconds later as Kyle Burroughs launched a shot from the point and Braden Christoffer tipped it home for his 10th of the year at the 17:50 mark. Colton Jobke got the second assist in his first game back and we were tied at 2's after the opening frame. The Oil Kings led the shots on goal 9-5 and did not have a chance on the powerplay. The Pats went 1 for 2 with the man advantage.

In the second period the two teams both had some chances and the Pats got a powerplay early. Then 46 seconds in David Musil took a 5 minute major for clipping which carries a game misconduct and the Pats went up 5 on 3. They would not score on the 2 man advantage and then the Pats took a penalty of their own and we played 4 on 4. That's when the Pats would take the lead as Kyle Burroughs walked in on the right side and fired home his 5th of the year Lane Scheidl at 4:26 and it was 3-2. The Pats had 44 seconds of powerplay time left on the 5 minute major after the 4 on 4 but Edmonton was able to kill it off. The Oil Kings would get their first powerplay after that but the Pats PK came up big and killed it off. Matt Hewitt was outstanding in the second making 16 saves to keep his team ahead 3-2 and that's how the period would end. The Oil Kings outshot the Pats 16-4 in the 2nd and led overall 25-9. The Oil Kings were oh for 1 on the powerplay to that point while the Pats were 1 for 4.

In the third the Oil Kings took over and found the tieing goal 1:04 into the period. Michael St. Croix finsihed his second of the game and 35th from Trevor Cheek and we were tied at 3's. Then at the 5 minute mark the Oil Kings would take the lead on the powerplay as Cody Corbett scored his 7th from Curtis Lazar and T.J. Foster and it was 4-3. The Pats then went down 5-3 as Michael St. Croix completed his hattrick with his 36th from Trevor Cheek and T.J. Foster at 7:40. The Oil Kings would get another at the 11:39 mark as T.J. Foster picked up his 27th from St. Croix and Cheek and it was 6-3 and that would be the final score. The Oil Kings outshot the Pats 13-5 in the frame and overall 38-14.

The Pats were decimated on the back end to start the third with Colby Williams going down with an injury and Emil Sylvegard took a high stick and had to get stitches so he missed some tie and the Pats were playing with 3 defenseman for a long stretch in the 3rd which allowed the Oil Kings to take over. The Pats powerplay went 1 for 4 while the penalty kill went 1 for 2. The Pats Morgan Klimchuk extended his point streak to 4 games with an assist in the loss. He has 3 goals and 6 assists in that stretch while Chandler Stephensons point streak is now at 3 with 5 points.  The Oil Kings clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the victory.

The Third star of the game went to the Oil Kings T.J. Foster who had a goal and two assists for Edmonton. The second star went to the Pats Kyle Burroughs who played upwards of 40 minutes and picked up a goal and an assist. Burroughs is riding a 3 game point streak with 2 goals and 8 assists in that stretch. The first star of the game went to Edmontons Michael St. Croix who scored a hattrick and added an assist for a four point night.

The Pats are back in action on Friday night at home to the Prince Albert Raiders in the 8th and final meeting of the season between the two clubs. 7 o'clock puck drop on 620 CKRM.

Watched hi lites of the Edm game on WHL web site, Ouellette had a beautiful tip on second goal but wasn't rewarded with goal?
