Chiefs Nachbaur records 600th Win

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Chiefs Head Coach Don Nachbaur earned his 600th career WHL win, becoming just the 4th WHL coach to do so as the Chiefs opened their 2014-15 home schedule with a win on Bud Light Opening Night at Spokane Arena. Over 25 local and regional firefighters were honored before the game as Chiefs fans met the club's roster for the first time, then watched as Spokane defeated Tri-City, 3-2 on Saturday night.

Liam Stewart opened the scoring and put the Chiefs up 1-0 at the 8:46 mark of the 1st Period, beating Comrie high on the goaltender's right side. Defenseman Jeff Rayman and forward Adam Helewka earned assists on the goal. The score remained 1-0 into the 2nd Period.

The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead early in the second frame as Riley Whittingham punched in a rare rebound opportunity, with Dominic Zwerger and Jason Fram earning assists. Fram, fresh off his return from Calgary Flames training camp, was named captain of the team in the annual opening night pre-game ceremony.

Tri-City would bounce back, taking advantage of mishandled pucks by Spokane to fight back into the game. Parker Bowles snapped one by Chiefs goaltender Garret Hughson to bring the Ams within one at the 13:37 mark of the 2nd, with Lucas Nickles earning the assist. Nickles would add another assist just three minutes later as former Chief Jackson Playfair found the back of the net after a loose puck could not be cleared from Hughson's crease.

Zwerger, who earned 1st Star honors, scored the game-winner on a power play 5:48 into the 3rd Period, with assists from Helewka and Fram.

Hughson shut the door late as the Americans pressured on a power play to end the game. He finished the game with 20 saves on 22 shots, while his counterpart on Tri-City, Eric Comrie, stopped 38 of 41 shots in the loss.

Spokane went 1 for 5 on the power play while holding Tri-City scoreless in four shorthanded situations, including in the final minutes.

The Chiefs next game is a road matchup on Friday, October 3 at Kootenay. They return home on UnitedHealthcare Magnet Schedule Giveaway Night at Spokane Arena as they face the Prince George Cougars on October 4.
