Pat Chat September 22nd

The Week That Was
After a week of practice the Pats opened up the season with a home-and-home set against the Brandon Wheat Kings.  Opening night saw the Pats fall 4-2 to their Manitoban rivals.  Braden Christoffer and Jared McAmmond scored for the Pats while Ryan Pilon, Taylor Green, Tyler Coulter and Braylon Shmyr scored for the home side.  The Pats returned home to the Brandt Centre to raise their East Division Pennant, but the Brandon dampened the mood by posting a 6-1 victory over Regina.  Jesse Gabrielle notched a hat trick for the visitors while Dryden Hunt scored the lone Pats marker.
The Week Ahead
Friday, September 26th – Pats at Moose Jaw (7:00 p.m. CST)
The Trans-Canada Clash gets going with an early season dust-up between the Pats and Warriors.  Last season the Pats took all eight meetings between the clubs and picked up a pre-season win over their arch-nemesis at the Extreme Hockey Pre-Season Tournament.  Moose Jaw opened the 2014-15 season with a pair of losses to the Swift Current Broncos.  Both games this weekend can be heard on Home Depot Pats Hockey on 620 CKRM starting at 6:35 p.m.
Saturday, September 27th – Pats vs. Prince Albert (7:00 p.m.)
The Pats face off with the Raiders after Prince Albert took a pair of games from the Queen City Kids to close out the pre-season.  Prince Albert opened the season with a pair of wins over the Saskatoon Blades despite still being without top forward Leon Draisaitl and defenceman Josh Morrissey.
Roster Moves
Pats trade Isaac Schacher to Saskatoon in exchange for 2015 8th Round WHL Bantam Pick
Pats reassign Jacob Elmer to Edge Hockey School
Braden Christoffer returns from Washington Capitals Rookie Camp
Dryden Hunt returns from Carolina Hurricanes Rookie Camp
Around the Rink
First Out of the Gate
For the second season in a row, the Pats were involved in the WHL’s Season Opener.  That led to the Pats being the first to accomplish a few feats.  Patrick D’Amico registered the first shot on goal while Braden Christoffer picked up the first penalty minutes and scored the first goal of the new season.
Still Away
After the Pats got back Dryden Hunt and Braden Christoffer for Opening Weekend; there are still key players away for the NHL Pre-Season.  Morgan Klimchuk played his first NHL Pre-Season game last night as the Flames took on the Oilers in split squad action.  Kyle Burroughs also remains with the New York Islanders as they head into the pre-season.

Rookies on the Board
After young players made an impact all through the pre-season it’s not surprising to see rookies already finding their way onto the scoresheet.  Sam Steel had an assist in each game on the weekend to sit tied with Braden Christoffer for the team lead in points.  Meanwhile, Jared McAmmond was the first Pats rookie to find the back of the net by scoring a shorthanded goal Friday night.  Though he wasn’t in the points column, Luc Smith dropped the mitts for his first WHL fight Saturday.
