The Regina Pats were in Brandon on Friday night to kick off the 2014/15 regular season against the Wheat Kings. The two teams had played 6 straight games against each other going back to last season, excluding the pre-season. The Pats went 4-2-1-0 in the pre-season while Brandon was 3-1-0-0. The Pats were without forward Moran Klimchuk and defenceman Kyle Burroughs who were at NHL training camps. The Wheat Kings were missing Eric Roy, Jayce Hawryluk, John Quenneville and Richard Nejezchleb who were at pro camps as well. The scratches for the Pats Friday were Kyle Burroughs, Morgan Klimchuk, Maximillian Kammerer, Colton Kroeker and Ryan Krushen. Daniel Wapple got the start in goal for the Pats against Jordan Papirny of the Wheat Kings.

In the first period the Wheat Kings would get an early powerplay and came very close to opening the scoring but Daniel Wapple came up with some huge saves to keep the game scoreless. Just as Braden Christoffer stepped out of the box he led a rush on the right wing. He skated into the right circle and got a backhand away that redirected off a skate and in for his 1st of the season. Sam Steel credited with the lone assist and his first WHL point at 3:34. The Wheat Kings would reply 26 seconds later as Ryan Pilon got a high shot away from the right point that looked like it changed directions and ended up in the back of the net over Wapples shoulder at 4:00 and it was 1-1. The Pats would get their first powerplay shortly after and had some good chances but were unable to score. The Wheat Kings would get their second powerplay with 1:47 left in the frame but the Pats would kill the clock and we went to the break tied at 1. 13 seconds of powerplay time carried into the second for the Wheat Kings. Brandon led the shots on goal 10-9 in the frame.

In the second frame the Pats would kill off the remaining powerplay time. It was a tight checking period in the early goings with not much in the way of scoring chances. Both teams would get two poweprlays in the period but were unable to find the back of the net. The Wheat Kings would find the go ahead goal at 16:13 as Taylor Green put home his first with assists to Duncan Campbell and Tyler Coulter to make it 2-1. That was how the period would end with the Pats trailing in shots 10-5 in the period and 20-14 overall.

In the third period the Pats would go shorthanded for the 5th time but on it would find the tying goal. Jared McAmmond led a 2 on 1 and fired into the right corner at 4:15 for his first WHL goal and it was 2-2. The goal was assisted by Chase Harrison. Brandon would re-take the lead at 6:36 as Tyler Coulter scored on a 2 on 1 to make it 3-2. Duncan Campbell and Jordan Papirny the assists. The Pats would pull Wapple late and Brandon would make it 4-2 as Braylon Shmyr scored into the empty net at 19:11. That was the final score. The Pats outshot Brandon 11-10 in the period but trailed overall 30-25.

The Pats went oh for 4 on the poweprlay but were 5 for 5 on the penalty kill with a short handed goal. Daniel Wapple stopped 26 of 29 shots faced in the loss.

The third star of the game went to Brandon's Jordan Papirny who made 23 saves on 25 shots. The second star to the Pats Braden Christoffer who scored a goal in the game and the first star to the Wheat Kings Tyler Coulter who scored the game winner and added an assist.
