HITMEN 5 PATS 1


The Regina Pats (5-4-1-0) were in Calgary on Sunday to wrap up a stretch of three games in three nights through the Central Division against the Hitmen (5-4-0-1). The Pats were coming off a 6-1 win in Lethbridge on Saturday night where Connor Gay and Druden Hunt each scored a goal and added 2 assists while Morgan Klimchuk made his season debut and scored his first goal of the year. Tyler Brown made his first WHL start and picked up his first win. The Hitmen were coming off a loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-1 and were also on the tail end of a three games in three nights stretch. Jake Virtanen was not in the lineup but is close to returning to the club. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Hitmen went to the poweprlay in the first minute but the Pats did a great job killing it off, then they got a second man advantage, again the Pats were able to kill the two minutes and the game remained scoreless. The best scoring chance of the period came from the Pats Dryden Hunt who just missed on a back door feed from Adam Brooks. The Pats got a powerplay in the late stages of the frame but were unable to score and the period ended scoreless. The shots on goal in the 1st were 6 apiece.

In the second the Pats took their 3rd penalty in the early goings and the Hitmen would capitalize. Travis Sanheim beat Wapple with a point shot at 4:57 and it was 1-0 Calgary. Chase Lang with the lone assist. The Pats went down a man again a few minutes later and again Calgary found the back of the net as Pavel Karnaukhov scored his 6th of the year with assists to Ben Thomas and Connor Rankin at 8:28 and it was 2-0. The Pats got a powerplay after that and did everything but score, Evan Johnson absolutely robbed Sergey Zborovskiy and Morgan Klimchuk to keep his team ahead by 2. Then on an odd man rush the Hitmen went up 3-0 as Travis Sanheim put home a rebound for his second of the game and 6th of the year at 18:26. Taylor Sanheim and Jordy Stallard the assists. That's how the period would end with the Hitmen outshooting the Pats 18-6 in the period and 24-12 overall.

In the third the Pats got on the board at 6:42 as Morgan Klimchuk snapped home his second of the year on a nice feed from Sam Steel and it was 3-1. Kyle Burroughs with the second assist. The Hitmen restored the 3 goal lead at 7:42 As Radel Fazleev scored his 3rd of the year with assists to Greg Chase and Travis Sanheim. Then at 10:41 Carsen Twarynski picked up his 2nd of the year with assists to Greg Chase and Radel Fazleev. That was the final score, the Pats outshot Calgary 8-6 in the period but trailed overall 30-20.

The Pats powerplay went oh for 3 on the powerplay and 2 for 4 on the penalty kill.

The third star of the game went to the Pats Morgan Klimchuk who scored his second goal of the year in as many games. The second star to Calgary's Evan Johnson who stopped 19 of 20 shots faced in the win and the first star to Travis Sanheim who scored twice and added an assist for the Hitmen.

The Pats return home to play the Portland Wnterhawks on Tuesday at the Brandt Centre at 7 o'clock.
