RECAP: BRONCOS 3 PATS 1


The Regina Pats hit the road on Friday to Swift Current to take on the Broncos for the first time since the 2015 playoffs. The Pats won that series four games to none. Tyler Brown got the start in goal for the first time since becoming the teams full time starter. The Pats traded goaltender Daniel Wapple to the Vancouver Giants on Thursday. Jordan Hollett is with the club now as the backup. The Pats were without Connor Hobbs, Aaron Macklin, Rykr Cole and Jake Leschsyhyn for the contest. The Broncos meanwhile were without their best player in Jake DeBrusk who is out indefinitely with a lower body injury. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats got two quick powerplays but Landon Bow kept the game scoreless. The Pats came close when a puck rolled past Bow but it was cleared off the goalline. The game stayed 0-0 until the final minute when the Broncos got the opening goal with the man advantage. Cavin Leth buried a rebound for his 3rd from Scott Feser and Jordan Thomson and it was 1-0 Swift. The Pats got it back just 24 seconds later when Sam Steel stole a puck in the offensive zone, centered for Taylor Cooper who scored his 1st of the year at 19:40 to tie the game 1-1. That was the score after with the Broncos leading on the shot clock 12-8.

The Pats got off to a good start in the second but did not find the go ahead goal. They then went to a four minute penalty kill on a highstick but the kill came up big and kept the scoreless. The Broncos did find the go ahead goal however at 11:36. Tyler Steenbergen centered from the left corner for Jon Martin who scored his 17th of the year to make it a 2-1 game. Tyler Brown continued to hold the fort and the Pats kept it to within a goal. The Broncos got a powerplay with 1:59 left in the period but again the Pats killed it off and it was 2-1 after 2. The Broncos outshot the Pats 18-8 in the period and led 30-16 overall.

In the third the Pats pushed and outshot the Broncos 10-9 but could not beat Landon Bow. Jon Martin scored an empty netter with 9 seconds left in the contest and Swift Current took the game 3-1. The final shots on goal in the contest were 39-26 in favour of the Broncos.

The Pats powerplay was oh for 3 in the game and the penalty kill went 3 for 4.

The third star of the game went to the Pats Tyler Brown who stopped 36 of 38 shots faced in the loss. The second star to the Broncos Landon Bow who made 25 saves on 26 shots and the first star to the Broncos Tyler Steenbergen who had an assist in the win.

The Pats are back at it Saturday night at home to the Victoria Royals at the Brandt Centre at 7 o'clock.
