RECAP: PATS 8 REBELS 5


The Regina Pats were home to the 2016 Memorial Cup Host Red Deer Rebels on Friday night at the Brandt Centre. The Pats were coming off a 6-1 loss at home to Victoria on Saturday, their second straight defeat while the Rebels won in Brandon on Wednesday 4-0 thanks to a 31 save performance from Rylan Toth. The Pats got their captain Colby Williams into the lineup for the first time on the season while both Rykr Cole and Jake Leschyshyn both were back as well. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats got off to another good start but Rylan Toth who carried a 141:17 streak of shutout hockey into the game was sharp early. The game stayed scoreless until 11:54 when the Rebels took the 1-0 lead. Jeff de Wit took a centering feed from Brandon Hagel and scored his second of the year. Colton Bobyk with the second helper. The Pats powerplay responded at 14:47. Sergey Zborovskiy with a wrist shot from the point beat Toth for his 4th of the season. Adam Brooks the lone assist and the Pats scored their first powerplay goal in 5 games. The Pats then took the lead at 17:05. Austin Wagner snapped a great shot from the left circle off the post and in for his 4th with assists to Brady Pouteau and Adam Brooks and it was 2-1. That's how the period ended, the Pats were 2 for 2 on the PK in the frame and 1 for 1 on the PP. Regina led on the shot clock 14-9 as well.

In the second period the Pats kept it coming and made it 3-1 just 39 seconds in. Adam Berg made a great move to the backhand and scored his 2nd of the season. That was it for Rylan Toth in goal after giving up 3 goals on 16 shots, Trevor Martin replaced him. The Pats then made it 4-1 when Austin Wagner buried his second of the night, 5th of the season from the right side. Chase Harrison and Adam Berg the assists at 4:05. Colby Williams in his first game got his first goal of the season at 11:12. He slapped it in from the right point with assists to Sam Steel and Adam Brooks and it was 5-1. The Rebels got one back on a great move and shot by Evan Polei for his 10th from Jeff de Wit and Ryan Pouliot at 15:21 and it was 5-2. A few minutes later the Rebels went back to Rylan Toth in goal. Martin gave up 2 goals on 8 shots in relief. Then on a 5 on 3 powerplay late the Pats extended the lead to 6-2. Lane Zablocki finished a back-door feed from Sam Steel at 19:39 for his 5th of the season. Chase Harrison the 2nd assist and the Pats took a 4 goal lead to the break. The Pats outshot Red Deer 15-11 in the period and led 29-20 overall.

In the third the Rebels started to chip away. First Haydn Fleury scored on a delayed penalty call at 4:06 for his 6th. 46 seconds later Michael Spacep scored his 10th with assists to Ivan Nikolishin and Austin Strand and it was 6-4. On the powerplay Ivan Nikolishin got the Rebels within a goal with his 12th from Michael Spacek and Wyatt Johnson at 9:07 and it was a 6-5 game. The Rebels had a great chance to tie it up with Wyatt Johnson on a breakaway but Jordan Hollett made a sensational right pad save to keep his team ahead by 1. Then the Rebels took 3 straight penalties and on the 3rd one the Pats were able to restore the two goal lead. Chase Harrison slapped in his 2nd of the year with assists to Colby Williams and Adam Brooks at 16:33 and it was 7-5. The Rebels pulled Toth late and Sam Steel scored his 6th from Rykr Cole at 18:41. That made it 8-5 and that was the final score. The Rebels outshot the Pats 13-11 in the period but the Pats led 40-33 overall.

The Pats powerplay was 3 for 9 in the contest and the penalty kill was 3 for 4.

The third star of the game went to the Pats Austin Wagner who scored twice in the win. The second star to the Pats Adam Brooks who had 4 assists and the first star to the Pats Colby Williams who had a goal and a helper in his first game back.

NOTE: Taylor Cooper left the game in the second period after taking a high stick.

The Pats are back in action on Sunday when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Brandt Centre at 4 o'clock.
