The Regina Pats kicked off their final weekend before the Christmas break on Friday when they took on the Saskatoon Blades at the Brandt Centre. The Pats were coming off a 4-3 loss to the Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday where Adam Brooks had a goal and two assists. The Blades meanwhile lost 7-4 to Lethbridge on Wednesday for their 10th defeat in 12 games. The Pats were 1-0-0-1 against the Blades on the season having allowed just one goal in those first two games. Liam Schioler made his Pats debut on Friday night after deciding to leave the USHL's Lincoln Stars and join the WHL. Colby Williams was absent from the game so the decision came at a good time for the Pats. As well 15-year-old defenceman Dawson Barteaux played in his 1st WHL game. He was the Pats 1st round pick in 2014.  Here are the lineup's for the game with the starters highlighted.






Pats scratches - Zborovskiy, Hilsendager, Knyzhov, Williams, Richards and Elmer. 
Blades scratches - Leslie, Gingras and Higson. 

In the first period the Blades were the better side. They scored on the powerplay at 9:44 thanks to Nick Zajac who finished his 8th with assists to Bryton Sayers and Connor Gay and it was 1-0. 1:01 later the Blades went up 2-0 when Josh Paterson potted a rebound for his 5th from Jake Kustra and Mason McCarty at 10:45. The Pats got a powerplay after that but didn't get anything going and trailed 2-0 after 1. The shots on goal were 13-13 in the period.

In the second the Blades made it 3-0 just 1:14 in when Nikita Soshnin walked to the front of the net and finished his 5th of the year. Ryan Graham the lone assist. The Pats got 3 powerplays in the period after that but could not get much going and trailed by 3 after 40 minutes. Saskatoon outshot the Pats 14-9 in the period and led 27-22 overall.

In the third the Blades made it 4-0 at 1:03 when Nikita Soshnin buried a rebound for his second of the night and 6th of the season from Ryan Graham. Then on the powerplay at 4:10 Terell Draude scored his 7th from Wyatt Sloboshan and Nolan Reid to make it 5-0. The Pats finally found their feet after that and Adam Brooks got them on the board at 5:23 with his 17th. Taylor Cooper and Austin Wagner the assists and it was 5-1. Colton Kroeker then picked up his 7th at 7:03 to make it 5-2, an unassisted goal. Austin Wagner then buried his 11th from Chase Harrison and Connor Hobbs at 10:08 to make it 5-3. The Pats then got their 6th powerplay and pulled Tyler Brown to go up 6 on 4 and got within a goal. Taylor Cooper tapped home his 5th from Connor Hobbs and Adam Brooks at 16:57 and it was 5-4. Lane Zablocki and Chase Harrison had glorious chances to tie it up with the extra attacker after that but couldn't get it to go and Mason McCarty added an empty netter for Saskatoon to make it 6-4 and that was the final score. The Pats outshot Saskatoon 12-11 in the period but trailed 38-34.

The Pats powerplay was 1 for 6 and the penalty kill went 2 for 4.

The third star of the game went to the Blades Ryan Graham who had two assists in the win. The second star to the Pats Austin Wagner who had a goal and an assist and the first star to the Blades Nikita Soshnin who had two goals. 

The Pats wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule on Saturday when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Brandt Centre at 7 o'clock on 620 CKRM.
