Regina Red Sox name new Coaching Staff

General manager Bernie Eiswirth officially confirmed that Mitch MacDonald will manage the Regina Red Sox in 2016.

MacDonald, who has a long relationship with the organization, takes over the Red Sox after serving the last two seasons as an assistant coach.

“When Scott mentioned he would not be returning, we both felt Mitch was the perfect choice to lead the Red Sox in 2016,” said general manager Bernie Eiswirth. “He understands our proud tradition, both from a player and coaching perspective, and he provides the organization with strong continuity.”

MacDonald played with the Red Sox in 2006 and again from 2009-2012.  His Red Sox resume is quite impressive as he was the first player to win the WMBL Triple Crown and is a two-time league champion. During his last three years as a player he also served as the Red Sox hitting coach.

“I’m excited and humbled by the opportunity and responsibility given to me by Bernie, Gary and the Red Sox board of directors,” said MacDonald. “I’ve been part of the Red Sox organization in some capacity since I was 18 and I’ve enjoyed it every step of the way.”

“In terms of coaching, I’ve watched my dad and talked to him about coaching for as long as I can remember,” added MacDonald.  “I’ve also had the chance to learn from some gentlemen who had success in this league, Rob, Justin and Scott.  Hopefully I can pull different pieces from all four of them that I was fortunate enough to watch work.”

MacDonald, who had an outstanding college career at Monterey Peninsula Junior College, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in 2006.  He went on to play three seasons in the Marlins minor league organizations.

When not on the diamond, MacDonald works as a teacher at Martin Collegiate and serves as instructor and coach for Martin Baseball Academy.

Eiswirth also announced that Rob Cherespuschak will return as the team’s director of recruiting.
