Pats - Hurricanes Game 1 Preview

The Regina Pats begin the 2016 post season tonight in Lethbridge against the Central Division champion Hurricanes. The last time these two clubs met in the post season was 20 years ago in 1996 when the Pats swept the Hurricanes in round 1. The Pats went 3-1-0-0 against Lethbridge during the 2015/16 regular season. Puck drop is at 7:00 with the pre-game at 6:35 on 620 CKRM.

The Lead Up
The Pats wrapped up the regular season on Saturday in Brandon with a 3-0 loss to the Wheat Kings. Jayce Hawryluk scored all three Brandon goals and Jordan papirny made 17 saves for the shutout. The Pats Tyler Brown made 48 saves in the loss. 

The Hurricanes also lost their last game of the year, 4-2 to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Arvin Atwal had a goal and an assist in the loss while Jayden Sittler made 28 saves. Clayton Kirichenko led the way for Medicine hat with 2 assists.  

The Matchup
The Pats and Hurricanes combined for one of the most exciting regular season series for the entire 2015/16 year. The clubs combined to score 11.50 goals per game, the Pats scored 24 goals to the Hurricanes 21 in the four contests and came away with a 3-1-0-0 record. Bobby Clarke Trophy winner Adam Brooks had 10 points in four games against the Hurricanes and Cole Sanford had 8. The Hurricanes Brayden Burke put up 13 points and Tyler Wong had 11. Special teams was almost a wash between the two clubs, the Pats powerplay was 4 for 14 while the Canes went 5 for 14. 

Brooks Prevails
Pats forward Adam Brooks became the first Regina Pat to win the WHL’s Bobby Clarke Trophy as the league’s leading scorer in 33 years. Brooks scored 38 goals and added 82 assists for 120 points which was four better than Dryden Hunt of the Moose Jaw Warriors. The last Pat to win the WHL scoring title was Dale Derkatch in 1982-83 when he put up 179 points. Brooks was named a 1st team Eastern Conference All-Star on Wednesday but was edged out as the Eastern Conference Player of the Year by Dryden Hunt. 

Second Half Success
The Regina Pats and Lethbridge Hurricnaes were two of the hottest teams in the second half of the regular season. In 37 games after the Christmas break the Pats recorded a 21-13-0-3 record while the Hurricanes went 22-13-1-1. Only two other clubs in the Eastern Conference recorded 20 or more wins after the break (Brandon & Red Deer). 

Former Teammates
The Pats will be taking on a couple of former teammates in this first round series. Colton Kroeker was traded to the Hurricanes ahead of the 2016 trade deadline and will take on his former club. As well defenceman Brady Reagan who was traded to Lethbridge last season for Taylor Cooper will take on his former club. Kroeker had 5 points in the lone meeting since the trade against the Pats while Reagan has one goal and one assist in 5 games against Regina going back to last year.
