RECAP: PATS 5 BRONCOS 2

The Regina Pats hit the road to Swift Current on Wednesday night for their fifth of six meetings with the Broncos. The Pats were looking to rebound from a 8-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday and were playing their game in hand on the Moose Jaw Warriors who sat six point ahead for third int he East Division. The Broncos meanwhile were coming off a 6-4 loss to the Warriors on Monday and sat 9 points back of Edmonton for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with six games left on their schedule. The Pats took a 2-1-0-1 record against the Broncos into Wednesdays contest. Goaltender Tyler Brown did not make the trip to Swift and as a result Max Paddock was called up to back up Jordan Holett. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats got an early powerplay and were able to find the back of the net. Riley Woods tipped in a point shot for his 7th of the year from Chase Harrison and Jared Freadrich and it was 1-0. The Broncos then got the next powerplay and that's when the Pats scored their 12th shorthanded goal of the season. Sam Steel fed Cole Sanford in front on a 2 on 1 and Sanford buried his 39th at 9:34 to make it 2-0. On that same powerplay just 24 seconds later the Broncos got that one back when Jon Martin absolutely ripped a shot from the right circle into the top corner for his 40th at 9:58 and it was a 2-1 games. The Pats got the two goal lead back at 14:35 when Lane Zablocki took a puck in his own zone, skated up the left wing, squeezed through a hip check and then cut to the middle and buried his 16th short side to make it 3-1. The Pats got their second powerplay after that with 18 seconds left in the framd and 1:42 carried over into the second with the Pats up by 2. Swift led on the shot clock in the period 14-12.

In the second the Pats scored on that remaining powerplay time. Riley Woods put in his own rebound for his second of the game and 8th of the season at 1:27 to make it a 4-1 game. The Pats dominated the period and at one point led the shots in the frame 9-1 but then got into some penalty trouble. They took a four minute minor for highsticking and a hooking penalty on the same play and went down 2 men for a full two minutes. The Pats killed it off and then the remaining two minutes after that to stay ahead 4-1. However just seconds after the last minor expired the Pats went down a man again and 1:45 carried over into the 3rd period. The Broncos ended up outshooting the Pats 14-11 in the period and led 28-23 overall. Jordan Hollett with a fantastic period making 14 saves.

In the third the Pats penalty kill went three for three and then Sergey Zborovskiy made is a 5-1 Pats lead when he put home his 8th on a rebound. Cole Sanford and Sam Steel the assists at 14:10. The Pats got a late powerplay but gave up a shorthanded goal to Lane Pederson at 16:28, his 19th and it was 5-2 and that was the final score. The Pats outshot the Broncos 13-10 in the period but trailed 38-36 overall. With the win the Pats get within four points of the Moose Jaw Warriors for third in the East Division.

The Pats powerplay was 2 for 3 in the win with a short handed goal against while the penalty kill was 8 for 9 with a short handed goal.

The third star of the game went to the Broncos Jon Martin who scored in the loss. The second star to the Pats Riley Woods who had two goals on the powerplay and the first star to Jordan Hollett who stopped 36 of 38 Bronco shots for his 8th win of the year. 

The Pats are back in action on Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Brandt Centre at 7 o'clock on 620 CKRM.
