RECAP: PATS 5 BRONCOS 4 OT

The Regina Pats wrapped up their home regular season schedule on Friday against the Swift Current Broncos at the Brandt Centre. The Pats took a four game winning streak into the contest and sat one point back of Moose Jaw for third in the East Division. The Broncos meanwhile were coming off a 6-2 loss to Brandon on Tuesday night. The Pats took a 3-1-0-1 record against Swift Current into Friday's 6th and final meeting of the season between the two clubs. The Pats handed out their yearly awards prior to the contest, the winners can be found by clicking here. Here are the lineups for the contest with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats got a great chance 20 seconds in when Sam Steel was denied in tight by the Pad of Taz Burman. Adam Brooks had his chances as well in the period but did not score. Neither team had a powerplay and through 20 minutes the game was tied 0-0. The Pats led on the shot clock 10-6.

In the second the Pats got the games first powerplay and got on the board. Sam Steel jammed in his 23rd with assists to Austin Wagner and Adam Brooks at 3:25 to make it 3-0. Less than a minute later Adam Brooks stole a puck in his own zone and fed Austin Wagner left wing at center. He burned wide and somehow got a shot to squeak by Burman on the short side for his 28th to make it 2-0 at 4:20. Then on their second man advantage the Pats went up 3-0. Chase Harrison beat a screened Burman from the point for his 8th of the year. Assists to Adam Brooks and Riley Woods at 7:00. That was it for Burman's night, allowing 3 goals on 21 shots and Travis Child came in to replace him. The Pats went to their first penalty kill after that when Adam Berg was called for a check to the head and was given a major penalty and a game misconduct. The Broncos managed to get one back late in the powerplay on a Artyom Minulin point shot at 12:03, his 5th of the year from Colby Sissons and Glenn Gawdin and it was 3-1. The Pats took another penalty and went down two men for 41 seconds but killed it off and then took the 3-1 lead to the break. The shots on goal were 13-13 in the period and the Pats led 23-19 overall.

In the third the Pats clamped thigs down for the opening 10 minutes and had numerous chances to extend the league but could not quite finish them off. That's when the Broncos got back in the game. Jamal Watson scored on a breakaway at 10:41 for his 19th and it was 3-2. The Broncos tied it up at 13:34 off a turnover. Calvin Spencer tipped in a point shot for his 8th and it was 3-3. The Broncos didn't stop there and took the lead at 16:55. Colby Sissons got a shot to go in from the left point through a screen for his 3rd and it was 4-3 Swift. The Pats pulled Brown late and got the game tied. Riley Woods put in his 8th from in tight with assists to Adam Brooks and Sam Steel and it was 4-4 and we needed overtime. The Pats outshot the Broncos 13-11 in the period and led 36-30 overall.

In overtime, Adam Brooks won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Connor Hobbs ripped home his 19th just 10 seconds in and the Pats won their 5th straight game, 5-4 the final and the Pats take over 3rd spot in the East Division with one game left on the schedule.

The Pats powerplay was 2 for 4 in the game and the penalty kill went 2 for 3.

The third star of the game went to the Pats Austin Wagner who had a goal and an assist in the win. The second star to the Broncos Colby Sissons who had a goal and two assists and the first star to the Pats Adam Brooks who had 5 assists and leads the WHL by 5 with 120 on the year. 

The Pats wrap up the regular season in Brandon on Saturday night against the Wheat Kings at 6:30 on 620 CKRM.

Have to say it but #2 almost cost the Pats the win. Very weak plays, weak stick. Nice to see coaches finally show some accountability and bench him after all the giveaways and mess ups even if it was 1.5 periods too late. The 5 min major also shut down the 4th line which really hurt. Lost all momentum. Resilient to win though. A big win tomorrow would be great.
