Pats - Rebels Game 1 Preview


The Regina Pats (4-1) kick off round two of the WHL Playoffs tonight in Red Deer against the 2016 Mastercard Memorial Cup Host Rebels (4-1). The Pats beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes in 5 games in round one while the Rebels needed 5 games to beat the Calgary Hitmen. Puck drop tonight is at 7 o’clock with the pre-game at 6:35 on 620 CKRM.

The Lead Up
The Pats were dominant in round one, winning four straight games to close out the Lethbridge Hurricanes in game 5 on Friday night.  The Pats oustcored the Canes 18-10 in the series and only gave up 4 goals in the final 4 games. 

The Red Deer Rebels also needed just 5 games to win their first round series over the Calgary Hitmen. The Rebels split the first two games on home ice with the Hitmen and then won three in a row to close out the series. Red Deer scored 16 goals in round one and gave up 12.

The Matchup
The Pats and Rebels went 2-2-0-0 in their regular season series. The Pats won once at home and once on the road in the first two meetings before the Rebels responded with two straight wins, once at home and once at the Brandt Centre. The Pats outscored the Rebels 13-11 in those games with 13 of the 24 total goals in the season series coming in the first matchup. the Pats Adam Brooks led the way offensively with a goal and 6 points in the season series, Sam Steel and Chase Harrison each had 5 points for the Pats in those games. Tyler Brown was fantastic against the Rebels as well going 1-2-0-0 with a 2.04 GAA and a .944 save percentage. The Rebels Ivan Nikolishin had 5 points against the Pats this year, Michael Spacek had 4 and Connor Bleackley and Jeff De wit had 3. Trevor Martin was 1-0-0-0 in goal with a 2.48 GAA and a .917 save percentage.

Round Two
The Regina Pats made it to round two of the WHL Playoffs for the first time in 8 years last season when they swept the Swift Current Broncos in round 1. Now for a second straight season they will play in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. The Pats are looking to snap another long streak this year, the last time the club made it to the third round was in 1993 when they were swept by the Broncos who went on to win the WHL Championship. 

Stingy First Round
The Regina Pats put on quite a defensive showing in round one against the Hurricanes. After giving up 6 goals in game 1, the club allowed just 4 goals in the next 4 games including 2 shutouts. Tyler Brown in goal went 4-0-0-0 in those contests with a 1.00 GAA and a .956 save percentage. The Pats allowed just 3 even strength goals in the series, two of those coming 5 on 5 and one 4 on 4.
