RECAP: Pats advance to round 2

The Regina Pats exploded for 7 goals on Friday night and closed out their first round series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes with a 7-2 in game 5. The Pats were without forward Adam Berg again in this one and Robbie Holmes checked in to his second game in a row. The Hurricanes got forward Jordy Bellerive back for game 5 and started Stuart Skinner in goal. Here are the lineup's for the contest with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats score early and often. First Sam Steel beat Stuart Skinner short side on a delayed penalty call at 1:24. The goal was reviewed to see if the net ad come off it's pegs but after a long delay the goal stood. Austin Wagner and Adam Brooks assisted on the goal to make it 1-0. Then at 2:59 the Pats extended it to 2-0. Lane Zablocki was denied by Stuart Skinner on a diving save but the puck squirted to the goal line and Zablocki poked it in for his first career WHL playoff goal with assists to Austin Wagner and Adam Brooks. The Hurricanes had two powerplays in the period and on the second one the Pats scored short handed. Sam Steel took a beautiful pass from Cole Sanford and put home his second of the night, 4th of the playoffs at 10:22 and it was a 3-0 game. The Pats were not done there, Lane Zablocki picked up his second of the night at 15:05 on a beautiful tip in front. Austin Wagner his third assist of the period, Brooks the other and it was 4-0 Regina. That was it for Stuart Skinner in the Canes net, allowing 4 goals on 9 shots. Game 4 starter Jayden Sittler replaced him. The Pats took the four goal lead to the break and outshot the Canes 11-10.

In the second the Pats pressed in the early goings but Jayden Sittler made some massive stops to keep the Hurricanes within 4. Lethbridge went to their third powerplay a short time later and with it, got on the board. Tyler Wong had a point shot go off his skate and in for his 1st of the post season at 5:33. Brayden Burke and Giorgio Estephan the assists and the Pats lead was 4-1. The Pats had some great chances after that to go back up by 4, Austin Wwagner was denied on a breakaway and on a 2 on 1 rush. The Pats gave up another penalty in the second half of the frame but killed it off and then got their first powerplay with 20 seconds left in the period. 1:40 carried over into the third with the Pats up 4-1. The Pats outshot the Canes 15-10 in the period and led 26-11 overall.

In the third the Hurricanes got to within 2 when Giorgio Estephan skated into the right circle and buried his second of the playoffs and it was 4-2. Penalties started to come and four on four the Pats went up 5-2. Austin Wagner scored his second at 7:11. Then on a 4 on 3 powerplay Adam Brooks made it 6-2 with his 5th. The Canes pulled Sittler with over 9 minutes left and that's when Cole Sanford scored into the empty cage for his 3rd to make it 7-2 at 12:06. That was the final score, the Pats win the series 4 games to 1 and advance to play either the Red Deer Rebels or Calgary Hitmen. The Pats outshot the Canes 9-5 in the period and 35-25 overall.

The Pats powerplay was 1 for 5 in the win and the penalty kill was 4 for 5 with a short handed goal.

The third star of the game went to the Pats Adam Brooks who had a goal and four assists. The second star to the Pats Sam Steel who scored twice and had two helpers and the first star to the Pats Austin Wagner who scored twice and had two assists. 

The Pats next game will be determined after the conclusion of the Red Deer Rebels, Calgary Hitmen Series.

So Phil did the Canes coaching staff not shake hands after the game? Seems pretty bush league if that was the case.

Kisio did not shake hands. Anholt did however

We had a coach by the name of Conacher who never shook hands either after he was knocked out 1st round by Moose Jaw
