Hart named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Year; Provorov captures Arctic Spas CHL Defenceman of the Year

Red Deer, AB - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the winners for the 10 major awards that will be presented at the annual CHL Awards Ceremony Saturday evening as part of the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup festivities in Red Deer.

Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart and Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Ivan Provorov claimed the 2015-16 Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Year and Arctic Spas CHL Defenceman of the Year honours respectively to represent the WHL.

Hart enjoyed a productive season for the WHL’s second-best defensive club this season, posting a 35-23-1-3 record with six shutouts in 63 appearances. The 17-year-old from Sherwood Park, AB finished second amongst WHL netminders with a 2.14 goals against average, finished with the sixth-best save percentage at .918 and placed first overall with 35 victories while propelling the Silvertips to a second place in the U.S. Division. Hart also posted a pair of victories in the 2016 WHL Playoffs to go along with a 2.39 goals against average and a .929 save percentage with one shutout. Furthermore, Hart was also named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week in late November and is ranked second amongst North American goaltenders in NHL Central Scouting's Final Rankings leading to the 2016 NHL Draft.

Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Ivan Provorov played a major role on the blue line from an offensive and defensive stand point in his second season in the WHL. The 19-year-old from Yaroslavl, Russia finished first in scoring amongst WHL defencemen with 73 points, including 21 goals, in 62 games while also finishing first in plus-minus with a plust-64 rating. Provorov also notched 13 points (3g-10a) in the 2016 WHL Playoffs to go along with a stellar plus-22 rating en route to helping the Wheat Kings claim the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions. A member of Russia’s National Junior team that won the silver medal at the World Junior Championships, Provorov was the Wheat Kings’ first round pick, 30th overall, in the 2014 CHL Import Draft. Provorov was selected seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 NHL Draft.
