The Weyburn Beavers used the big bat of outfielder Ulysses Fluellen to get by the Regina Red Sox 5-4 Friday night. Fluellen went two for four with a home run blast for the Beavers, who improved their 2016 record to 8-6. The loss drops the Regina Red Sox record to 7-4.
Scott Beever got the win for Weyburn, pitching seven complete innings giving up three runs on three hits while striking out eight Red Sox hitters.
Regina starter Allan Sanchez, making his third start of the season, struggled early as he lasted just 4.1 innings and was tagged for all five Beaver runs. The Red Sox bullpen kept the game close and gave the team a chance as Landon Russo and Seth Sorenson blanked the Beavers the rest of the way.
The Red Sox had a golden opportunity in the top of the 9th inning to make some noise and extend the game, but with two runners on and two out, Weyburn closer Eric Evans got Derek Slade to strike out to end the contest.
