PRE-SEASON RECAP: PATS 5 TIGERS 4 OT


The Regina Pats won a back and forth affair with the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-4 in overtime on Saturday night at the Brandt Centre. Sam Steel scored the game winner as a part of a two goal night.

In the first period the Pats got off to a great start offensively but it took until 13:17 to get the first goal. Sam Steel banged in a loose puck in the crease for his 2nd of the pre-season from Dawson Leedahl and Nick Henry and it was 1-0. The Pats got into penalty trouble after that and went down 2 men for 1:21 and the Tigers tied it up. John Dahlstrom finished off a pretty passing play on the back door assisted by Ty Schultz and Matt Bradley at 15:53 to make it 1-1. That was the score through 20 minutes with the Pats leading on the shot clock 16-12. 

In the second the Pats took the lead back on the powerplay at 6:13. Chase Harrison scored his first with assists from Dawson Barteaux and Riley Woods and it was 2-1. Medicine Hat tied it with a powerplay goal of their own from Zach Fischer at 7:05. David Quenneville and Ty Schultz the assists and it was 2-2. 46 seconds later Austin Wagner gave the Pats the lead back when he finished off a 2 on 1 rush with Adam Brooks for his 2nd of the pre-season at 7:51 to make it 3-2. It stayed that was until 18:59 when John Dahlstrom stole a puck in back of the Pats net and centered for Matt Bradley who scored to make it 3-3 and that was the score through 40 minutes. The Tigers outshot the Pats 14-12 in the period but the Pats led 28-26 overall.

13 seconds into the final period the Pats took their fourth lead of the contest. Riley Woods a beautiful back hand feed cross ice to Austin Wagner who one handed it into the net short side for his second of the night and 3rd of the pre-season. Connor Hobbs the second assist and it was 4-3. Once again however the Tigers got even at 1:54. Ryan Jevne, his 3rd from Ryan Chyzowski and Kristians Rubins made it 4-4. That was the score after regulation, the Tigers outshot the Pats 11-8 in the period and led 37-36.

In overtime the Pats got a powerplay with 2 minutes left and scored the game winner. Sam Steel tipped a Connor Hobbs point shot for his 2nd of the night at 3:20. Adam Brooks the other helper and the Pats improved to 3-2-0-0 in the pre-season with a 5-4 win. The Pats outshot the Tigers 4-2 in OT and 40-38 overall.

The Pats powerplay was 2 for 6 while the penalty kill went 2 for 4. 

The Pats continue the pre-season on Friday in Brandon against the Wheat Kings at 6:30 Regina time on 620 CKRM.
