PRE-SEASON RECAP: PATS 4 BLADES 1


The Regina Pats wrapped up their pre-season tournament at the Co-operators Arena on Saturday night against the Saskatoon Blades. The Pats were 1-1 at the tournament heading in and were coming off a 7-2 win over Prince Albert on Friday. The Blades meanwhile had come back from 3-0 deficits twice to win 4-3 in their first two games. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.

In the first period the Pats went to a two man advantage for 1:18 in the early going but were unable to capitalize. They continued to push but Blades netminder Nolan Maier stood strong and made some big saves all period long. The Pats had three total powerplays to the Blades two and neither team scored in the opening 20. The Pats outshot Saskatoon 17-7.

In the second the Blades opened the scoring on the 5 on 3 powerplay at 0:49. Luke Gingras jammed in his 3rd of the pre-season with assists to Cameron Hausinger and Anthony Bishop. The game stayed that way until the midway point when the Pats got one of their 3 powerplays in the frame. Sergey Zborovskiy hammered a one timer from the left point and beat Nolan Maier short side for his 1st. The assists were credited to Filip Ahl and Nick Henry at 10:14 and it was 1-1. That was the score through 40 minutes, the Blades outshot the Pats 13-12 in the period but Regina led 29-20 overall.

In the third the Pats took the lead 2-1 just 1:26 in. Jared Freadrich ripped a slap shot from the middle point for his 2nd of the pre-seaosn with assists to Riley Woods and Luc Smith. It stayed 2-1 until late when the Blades pulled the goalie while on the powerplay. The Pats scored twice into the empty net, the first from Nick Henry and the second from Brady Pouteau to make it 4-1 and that was the final score. The Pats survived 1:56 down two men in the middle part of the period and improved to 2-1-0-0 in the pre-season. The Blades outshot the Pats 11-10 in the period but the Pats led 39-31 overall.

The Pats were 1 for 6 on the powerplay and 8 for 9 on the penalty kill.

The Pats are off until Friday when they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers in Wainwright AB at 7 o'clock.
